UK Student Visa: Why You Need PTE Academic UKVI, Not Standard PTE Academic
The UK Home Office only accepts one specific version of PTE Academic for student visa applications — and booking the wrong one can derail your application entirely.
If you're applying for a UK student visa, there's one detail that trips up more applicants than almost anything else: PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI are not interchangeable for visa purposes.
The UKVI Distinction The UK Home Office has approved PTE Academic as a Secure English Language Test (SELT) for visa purposes — but specifically the UKVI version, not the standard PTE Academic test most universities accept for admissions. The content and format are identical; the UKVI version simply adds a Unique Reference Number (URN) to your score report, which is mandatory on the visa application form. If you sit the standard version by mistake, your score generally won't be usable for the visa application itself, even though it's the same test content.
English Requirements by Course Level The UK Student Route requires at least CEFR B2, which corresponds to PTE 59, as the standard minimum. Foundation and pathway courses typically have a lower bar — around PTE 43 overall, with at least 43 in each individual skill (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening). For reference, PTE scores map to CEFR roughly as: 30 = A1, 43 = B1, 59 = B2, and 76 = C1.
Score Validity A PTE Academic UKVI result is valid for two years from your test date. Once that window closes, the score can no longer be used for a visa application, even if it was accepted when you first tested.
Booking the Right Test When you book, make sure you specifically select "PTE Academic UKVI" and book at an authorized UKVI test centre — not just any PTE Academic test centre. It's a small detail with a large consequence if missed.
Preparing for Either Version Since PTE Academic UKVI and standard PTE Academic share identical content and difficulty, preparation is exactly the same either way — the only thing that changes is which version you actually book on exam day. PTE24's mock tests and scoring feedback are built around the standard PTE Academic format, so the skills you build apply directly whichever version your visa application requires.
