PTE Core vs PTE Academic: Which Test Do You Actually Need?

Pearson now offers two distinct English tests, and picking the wrong one can cost you months of preparation time. Here's the real difference.

What PTE Core Is For PTE Core tests general, everyday English rather than academic English — the kind of language used in a workplace, community, or day-to-day conversation, not a lecture hall. It's specifically built for Canadian immigration: permanent residency, work permits, and citizenship applications, with scores that feed directly into IRCC's Express Entry system.

What PTE Academic Is For PTE Academic, by contrast, is aimed at university admissions and professional licensing, and is accepted by thousands of institutions worldwide, including for study visas in Canada. If you're applying to a university anywhere — including Canada — PTE Academic is very likely the test you need, not PTE Core.

The Format Differences The two tests aren't just scored differently — they're structured differently. PTE Core removes the essay entirely, replacing it with a "Write Email" task, and swaps the academic-lecture-style task for a "Respond to a Situation" task, where you read and listen to an everyday scenario and speak your response naturally, the way you would in real life.

The One Rule That Actually Matters If your goal is Canadian permanent residency, work permits, or citizenship, you need PTE Core — PTE Academic is not accepted for those specific immigration pathways. If your goal is a university place (anywhere, including Canada) or most other countries' immigration pathways, PTE Academic is the one to prepare for.
