Canada Express Entry Language Requirements 2026: IELTS, CELPIP, and PTE Core Explained
IRCC accepts three designated English tests for Canadian permanent residence in 2026 — but the CLB thresholds and rules around combining scores are stricter than many applicants expect.
If you're applying for Canadian permanent residency through Express Entry, understanding exactly which English test to take — and what score you actually need — matters more than most applicants realize.
Which Tests Are Accepted For English, IRCC accepts three designated tests for Express Entry and most economic immigration programs: CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training, and PTE Core. Note that PTE Academic is not on this list — it's used for study permits and Canadian university admissions, but it's rejected for Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, and citizenship applications.
CLB Requirements by Program The minimum requirement depends on which Express Entry category you're applying under. For Canadian Experience Class (TEER 0/1) and Federal Skilled Worker applicants, you need at least CLB 7 across all four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. For TEER 2/3 categories, the minimum drops to CLB 5 across all four skills.
What CLB 7 and CLB 9 Look Like on PTE Core On PTE Core's 10–90 scale, CLB 7 corresponds to Speaking 68, Writing 69, Reading 60, and Listening 60. Reaching CLB 9 — which unlocks significantly more Express Entry points — requires Speaking 84, Writing 88, Reading 78, and Listening 82. These figures come from Pearson's own PTE Core Score Guide; always confirm the current thresholds directly with Pearson or IRCC before relying on them for a real application, since score-to-CLB mappings are reviewed periodically.
The Rule That Catches People Out Your overall CLB level is determined by your lowest individual skill score, not an average — so a strong Speaking score won't compensate for a weak Writing score. All four skill scores must also come from a single test sitting; you cannot mix a Listening score from one test with a Writing score from another. And your results must be less than two years old both when you submit your Express Entry profile and when you submit your final PR application.
Preparing for the Right Test Because Express Entry scoring is genuinely skill-by-skill, not just an overall target, practicing each skill independently — rather than focusing only on your strongest area — is what actually moves your CLB level. If PTE Academic is part of your journey too (for a study permit before transitioning to permanent residency, for example), PTE24's mock tests and AI-scored practice can help you build the underlying English skills both tests ultimately measure.
