Australia's 2026 Skilled Migration PTE Score Requirements Explained

If you're planning a skilled migration application to Australia, the English-language requirements changed significantly from 7 August 2025 onward, and these remain the standard for 2026 visa applications. Here's what you need to know about PTE Academic score requirements specifically.

Competent English — The Minimum Bar For most skilled visa subclasses (189, 190, 491, and 482), Competent English is the baseline requirement. For PTE Academic, that means hitting at least Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51, and Speaking 54 — a per-skill minimum, not an overall average. Meeting Competent English satisfies eligibility, but on its own it doesn't earn any migration points.

Proficient and Superior — Where the Points Are To actually score points on the skilled migration points test, you need to go further. Proficient English earns 10 points, while Superior English earns 20 points — and the thresholds for both have risen noticeably, with Writing jumping from 79 to 85 and Speaking from 79 to 88 at the higher bands.

In-Person Testing Only One important detail that trips up a lot of applicants: the Department of Home Affairs does not accept fully online English tests for migration purposes. That includes IELTS Online, OET@Home, TOEFL iBT Home Edition, and CELPIP Online — all rejected. You'll need to book an in-person, test-centre-based PTE Academic exam.

Preparing for the Right Threshold Because migration points now hinge on hitting specific per-skill scores rather than an overall average, targeted practice matters. A strong Reading score won't compensate for a Writing score that falls short of the Proficient threshold.
